Discover the real “stuff” of history with SEARCH!

SEARCH, The Student Research Center for History, at the Maryland Historical Society is designed to introduce middle and high school students to primary source-based historical research. Through SEARCH students will gain access to the Historical Society’s vast collection of original manuscripts, images, and artifacts. Students will work alongside professional researchers, developing nuanced content knowledge through the  use of important research and analytical skills.

SEARCH PROGRAMS 

 

Introduction to Primary Sources

An introduction to the handling and analysis of original primary source manuscripts and images, using the MdHS archives. Teachers can choose topics such as the Civil Rights Movement, Slavery, the Great Baltimore Fire, History Day research, or propose their own topic.

Grades: 6,7,8,9,10,11,12

Cost: $4 per student

Details: One 60 minute session

Historical Research

An opportunity for classes to conduct in-depth research using original primary sources on a variety of topics in Maryland and U.S. history; program tailored to the specific needs of each class.

Grades: 6,7,8,9,10,11,12

Cost: $4 per student

Details: Each session is 60 minutes

Individual Student Research

A chance for individual students to conduct primary source research under the guidance of an MdHS educator. Perfect for National History Day projects!

Grades:  7,8,9,10,11,12

Cost: $15 per student

Details: Each session is 60 minutes

Individual Teacher Research

Teachers are also invited to conduct research and review original sources for use in the classroom.

VIRTUAL SEARCH

These three hour long sessions are conducted over live video conferencing! Student gain an in-depth introduction to the skills and resources they need to successfully analyze primary source manuscripts and images, using the MdHS archives. Teachers can choose topics such as the Civil Rights Movement, Slavery, the Great Baltimore Fire, History Day research, or propose their own topic.

Cost: $125

Details:  45 - 60 minutes sessions

Open Archives Saturdays!

Research your History Day topic using the collections at the MdHS, guided by our professional educators and researchers. These sessions are limited to 10 students and registration is on a first-come, first served basis. Parents and teachers are encourages to accompany students and will receive free admission to the museum and library.

Grades: 6,7,8,9,10,11,12

Cost: $15 per student
